From Reno to Frenchglen Oregon via Winnemucca is desert,
desert, desert. OK so it’s high desert, but desert nonetheless.
Winnemucca is a
5 casino hamlet that Kierkegaard would have understood for its’ despair. RV parks
in such places have a very sad feeling – and cheap monthly rates. You
gotta figure that nobody plans for their
life to end up where they live in a nonfunctional motorhome in a glorified
casino parking lot.
Luckily, Frenchglen is a super quiet out of the way berg in
the Oregon high desert that allows for some good whiking – that is a cross
between hiking and walking. We’ve all faced that place where you aren’t quite
hiking, but also not just walking either. Whiking. Or Halking if you prefer.
Our whike was 6.2 miles with about 1000 total feet of
elevation gain starting at just under 4000 ft. It was a necessary bit of actual
out of the city exercise after Reno and Winnemucca. The best part was Athena
got about 4.5 miles off lead to do what dogs do best – run amok.
Tomorrow we head up towards John Day Oregon for some more
dog-friendly hiking. Athena is currently
passed out on the floor of the RV. Her whike was closer to 10 miles with all
the amokedness – I know that’s 2 invented words in one post. I’ll try not to
invent too many words.
More soon….
