A three hour drive from Lake Isabella to Sequoia National
Park’s Lodge Pole Campground ended up taking us from 7:45 AM to 2:30 PM. The RV
did not appreciate the first hour plus of steep curvy up and down even a little
bit. We made it through the hard part and headed for the south entrance of the
park. On arrival we found out that because of road work no vehicle over 22 feet
– our RV is 23 feet- could go through to the campground from the south.
We ended up driving back through Visalia to avoid yet
another very steep and curvy road and the rest is history.
There was a large
group of gypsies (?) at the campground who spilled into 2 sites – one next to
us. They were mainly playing some hideous accordion music that was a cross
between Zydeco and Mexican Bronco music. Not anything we were into.
We rose and got going with a hike called Big Baldy. It
started at 7260 ft of elevation and rose to 8261 over 2.3 miles one way. In
under 2 hours we were back rolling hoping to take Ms. Athena for a walk at the
General Grant Tree which is paved. We found out that paved isn’t good enough
for taking a dog – you can only take them where cars go. Oh well.
I do like big huge trees and the ones on the Grant trail
didn’t disappoint.
We hit the Whole Foods in Fresno and headed to our camp
ground for the night Millerton State Park. It was spoken highly of in our
camping guide and we didn’t even buy the Braille version. The only open part of
the park has all of the hookup sites in a large parking lot. Not pretty. We had
planned on 2 nights, but now we are heading to Yosemite in the morning to stay
at Wawona Campground for a night before heading to Upper Pines campground in
Yosemite Valley for 2 nights.
