Say Yes To NoLa

We have been going to the French Quarter Festival in New Orleans since 2002. We have missed a couple of years along the way. In 2003 we were in Greece and Italy and the year after Katrina we missed as well.

The first time you visit New Orleans it is difficult to miss the heart of the place. You rarely feel like family when you travel some place, but that is the feeling I always got in New Orleans - even just after Katrina when they were struggling and suffering to bring their beloved city back.

The festival is now up to 22 stages of music all over the French Quarter which is only 1.5 miles from end to end. If you feel like R&B there's a stage, Trad Jazz? - there's a stage, Brass Band? - yep a stage.

When the music is over in the French Quarter we like to head to Frenchman Street where there are at least 6 different venues to listen to more music. Many of the places have no cover charge. The bands play for tips.

Eating healthy is a little challenge, but there are choices if you want them. You just stay away from the fried and go for the grilled and you are OK. We started a new plan last year where we walk to the Whole Foods in the Garden District and buy food to cook and prepare at our house. It gives us a 6 mile walk and lots of fresh organic food.

The weather is going to be in the low 80's and sunny which every one of our group can use during a Washington spring.

Here are some shots from past trips to get you planning your first or next trip to a city with a soul - New Orleans.
